EWEB and University of Oregon's Gas Turbine Project Faces Climate Criticism

NATURAL GAS

The University of Oregon and Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) are facing backlash from climate activists over a pilot project to increase operations of a natural gas turbine on campus. EWEB aims to improve power grid reliability during winter demand increases, citing potential shortfalls in the Pacific Northwest.

The project could raise gas consumption by 65% during winter months, contradicting the university's 2010 Climate Action Plan. Critics, including the Sierra Club, argue the initiative lacks public engagement and undermines renewable energy investments.

The pilot allows EWEB to operate the turbine in January and February while data is collected. A 2024 task force recommended electrifying the campus boiler system, pending action from the board of trustees.
