Experimental Peninsula Forms on Lake Michigan as Part of Dredging Study
A new peninsula is being constructed at Silver Beach, St. Joseph, MI, to study sediment dispersion effects. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers aims to evaluate different sand placement methods to enhance water clarity post-dredging.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting an experiment at Silver Beach in St. Joseph, MI, involving the construction of a temporary peninsula using 83,000 cubic yards of sand and sediment.
Dredging operations, executed by Viking Marine Construction, began last week and will continue until early August, focusing on how different sand placement techniques affect turbidity levels in the water. Researchers will analyze how the peninsula's shape impacts wave energy and sediment dispersal, potentially informing future dredging practices.
If successful, this study could lead to the reuse of sediment from other harbor areas. Beachgoers are warned of unstable conditions on the newly formed peninsula, which is expected to disappear within six months.
