Experts Propose Sector Coupling and Grid Reforms to Address Pakistan's Energy Issues
Energy experts convened by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute proposed sector coupling and grid reforms to tackle Pakistan's energy challenges, including overcapacity and the curtailment of wind energy projects in Sindh due to grid congestion. They emphasized the need for improved grid planning and market reforms, alongside a national hydrogen strategy aimed at promoting green hydrogen production to support economic revival and job creation.

Energy experts and stakeholders discussed potential solutions for Pakistan's energy sector during a webinar organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute. They highlighted sector coupling and grid reforms as methods to address overcapacity and under-utilization of power.
Wind energy is being curtailed, not due to high costs, but because of system design limitations. Wind projects in Sindh face up to 40% curtailment due to grid congestion. Experts called for grid planning, market reforms, and integration of sector coupling in government policies. A national hydrogen strategy is under approval to support green hydrogen production, which could aid in economic revival and job creation.
