Experts Recommend Increased Naval Assets for Atlantic Bastion Submarine Tracking Initiative
Analysts have emphasized the need for more ships in the Atlantic Bastion initiative to effectively monitor Russian submarine movements in the North Atlantic. Dr. Marc De Vore from the University of St Andrews highlighted the reliance on sensors and unmanned systems to track submarines. However, he cautioned that detection is insufficient without adequate Royal Navy platforms to maintain contact with identified adversaries. Continued investment in frigates and collaboration with NATO allies is deemed essential to enhance tracking capabilities.

During a Defence Committee session, experts discussed the Atlantic Bastion initiative, which aims to track Russian submarines in the North Atlantic using sensors and unmanned systems. Dr. Marc De Vore noted that while the initiative is crucial for monitoring submarine movements, detection capabilities alone are inadequate without sufficient Royal Navy frigates and attack submarines to follow identified Russian vessels.
He highlighted the challenges posed by Russian tactics to evade NATO forces and the necessity of maintaining contact during peacetime. De Vore stressed the importance of continued investment in naval assets and cooperation with NATO allies to enhance tracking efforts.
