Extortion Issues Plague Coal Mining Operations in Balochistan, Pakistan
Coal miners in Balochistan, Pakistan, are reportedly forced to pay extortion money to Baloch separatists, according to a senior official from the Pakistan Minerals Development Corporation (PMDC). The Senate Standing Committee on Privatization discussed the security challenges during a briefing, highlighting the impact of the ongoing insurgency. While the provincial administration denies widespread extortion, they acknowledge militant involvement. The government claims to have killed over 700 extortionists in recent operations against groups like the BLA and TTP.

Coal miners in Balochistan are facing extortion demands from separatist militants, as confirmed by a senior PMDC official during a Senate committee meeting. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has increased attacks, complicating mining operations.
The PMDC's coal mines cover over 17,000 acres, with a 30-year lease structure, earning about Rs2,500 per ton. Although the provincial administration denies extensive extortion, it acknowledges some militant group involvement.
The government reported over 700 extortionists killed in operations against the BLA and TTP. Security measures are claimed to be in place, particularly for international firms.
