ExxonMobil Delays Baytown Hydrogen Project Decision Amid Market Uncertainty in the US
ExxonMobil has postponed a final investment decision (FID) on its Baytown, Texas, low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia project until the end of 2025 due to a lack of offtakers, despite tentative agreements with Japan's Marubeni and Europe's Trammo. The decision comes as the company awaits regulatory clarity under tax incentive 45V, which could impact project viability.
Other Texas projects, including HIF Global's e-fuels and Avina's hydrogen initiatives, also remain undecided. While some companies shift focus to more favorable regulatory environments in Canada, South America, and Europe, Danish manufacturer Topsoe anticipates advanced projects could reach FID in 2026. The overall landscape for US hydrogen projects appears less optimistic, with companies evaluating their strategies against more diversified portfolios across the Americas.
