FAA Officials Predict Certification of Alternative Technology Aircraft in Two Years

Former acting FAA administrator Billy Nolen forecasts that three companies will achieve certification for alternative technology aircraft within two years, focusing on supersonic and hybrid propulsion. Nolen, now a Senior Strategy & Regulatory Advisor at ZeroAvia and chief regulatory officer for Archer, discussed the potential advancements at an AeroClub Washington (DC) meeting.

He noted the increasing role of AI in the FAA, emphasizing its potential benefits for agency capabilities and funding. Former FAA officials highlighted unprecedented cooperation between the FAA and industry to drive technological progress, with a strong push from the current administration.

They urged for efficient resolution of differences to maintain progress. Discussion also included the need for stronger relationships with the Department of Defense and NASA to leverage technological resources.
