Fairbanks North Star Borough Approves Tax Incentive for New Housing Development
The Fairbanks North Star Borough has approved a tax incentive for new housing aimed at addressing local housing shortages and accommodating incoming military personnel. Proposed by Mayor Grier Hopkins, the incentive will last three years and provide property value exemptions for new units, dependent on unit count and bedrooms. Eligible properties must be in Fairbanks or North Pole, within military zones or suitable for high-density development. Recent amendments allow connections to water holding tanks or wells.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough has unanimously approved a tax incentive to promote new housing in the area, targeting the housing shortage and supporting personnel from Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base. The incentive, introduced by Mayor Grier Hopkins, will be available for three years and offers exemptions on assessed property values, lasting from three to ten years based on the number of units and bedrooms.
Eligible properties must be located within Fairbanks or North Pole, in military zones, or suitable for high-density development with access to public utilities. The ordinance was amended to permit connections to water holding tanks or wells.
