Fatih Birol Advocates for Türkiye's Nuclear Expansion with Global Partners
Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, recently underscored the critical role of nuclear energy in Türkiye's energy landscape during the Gastech 2025 forum in Milan. He articulated that while Türkiye has made significant strides in renewable energy, nuclear technology remains essential for the nation’s energy strategy. Birol called for an expansion of nuclear projects in collaboration with global partners, emphasizing the importance of diversifying energy sources.
Currently, Türkiye is advancing the construction of its first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, located in the southern province of Mersin. Alongside this, the country aims to develop a capacity of 5 gigawatts from small modular reactors by 2050. Such initiatives, Birol noted, would not only bolster Türkiye's energy independence but also enhance its regional influence.
Birol pointed out that Türkiye's geographic position, adjacent to major oil and natural gas producers, combined with its ongoing infrastructure projects, strengthens its potential as an energy supplier. He acknowledged the progress made in natural gas and renewable energy while stressing the need for further developments in nuclear power. Despite these advancements, he reminded that Türkiye continues to rely heavily on imported oil and natural gas.
Looking ahead, Birol expressed hope for a significant reduction in these imports, which would benefit both the nation’s energy security and its economic stability. The path forward, he suggested, hinges on solidifying the steps taken in natural gas production and nuclear energy development, as these will play a pivotal role in shaping Türkiye's energy future.
