FBI Chooses Armored BMW X5 Over GM Defense Suburban HD for Vehicle Fleet
The FBI has opted for armored BMW X5 Protection VR6 vehicles instead of GM Defense's Suburban HD for its vehicle fleet, citing the BMWs' affordability and less conspicuous design as key factors for taxpayer savings. FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson emphasized that fleet decisions are based on usage, security needs, and budget efficiency. This shift is significant, as the U.S. Department of State previously contracted GM Defense for Suburban HD units.

The FBI, under director Kash Patel, has selected a fleet of armored BMW X5 Protection VR6 vehicles, moving away from GM Defense's Suburban HD. Patel noted that the BMW models are less conspicuous and more affordable, making them a better choice for taxpayer savings.
FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson indicated that vehicle fleet decisions are routinely made based on usage, security needs, and budget efficiency. The BMW X5s are manufactured at the Spartanburg Plant in South Carolina, while the Suburban HD is produced at GM Defense's facility in Concord, North Carolina.
This decision is notable as the U.S. Department of State previously contracted GM Defense for Suburban HD units. BMW also holds a government contract for armored vehicles for diplomats.
