Federal and Provincial Governments Fund University of Regina's Small Modular Reactor Testing Centre in Saskatchewan
The Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan announced funding for the University of Regina to establish the Small Modular Reactor Safety, Licensing, and Testing centre (SMR-SLT). The initiative includes a federal investment of $1.96 million through PrairiesCan and $4 million from Saskatchewan, aimed at advancing the nuclear energy sector.
The SMR-SLT will provide access to modern testing facilities for researchers and businesses, facilitating the safe development of small modular reactors (SMRs). Canada currently generates 15% of its power from nuclear energy, yet none is produced in Western Canada. The project is expected to create 18 direct jobs, support 10 small businesses, and prepare for the estimated 2,500 to 3,500 jobs needed for future nuclear power plants by the mid-2030s.
