Federal Flood Safety Project Could Reduce Heron Lakes Golf Course Size
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is designing a federal flood safety project that may reduce Heron Lakes Golf Club by 30 acres. This initiative aims to protect 13,000 acres and involves collaboration between federal and local entities.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the Urban Flood Safety and Water Quality District, is designing a flood safety project that will potentially affect Heron Lakes Golf Club, reducing its size by up to 30 acres.
The initiative, funded by a 2024 local ballot measure and federal appropriations, aims to improve flood protection for 13,000 acres by constructing new levees over 27 miles. A 2021 study highlighted possible adverse effects on the golf course, indicating impacts to 10 acres, with additional concerns for playability during construction.
The project is projected to begin in the early 2030s, as existing flood protections are outdated. The collaboration reflects an urgent need for flood safety improvements in the wake of past disasters.
