Federal Grant for Enhanced Geothermal Project in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania receives a $14 million federal grant for an enhanced geothermal project at a CNX natural gas site. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while augmenting energy generation capacity in the state.

The U.S. Department of Energy has allocated $14 million for an enhanced geothermal energy project at a CNX natural gas well in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. This pilot project represents the first of its kind in the eastern United States and aims to utilize underground heat for energy production, potentially increasing geothermal's contribution to national electricity generation from less than 1% to 12% by 2050, as per a recent study.
The project, backed by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will also provide heating to local buildings and support the local electricity grid. The Shapiro administration is collaborating with CNX through its subsidiary, CNX Green Ventures, to conduct a thorough assessment of the existing well, first drilled in 2013.
