Fervo Energy's Cape Generating Station to Launch U.S.'s First Large-Scale Enhanced Geothermal System by June 2026
Fervo Energy is building the first large-scale commercial enhanced geothermal system (EGS) generator in the U.S., scheduled to begin operations in June 2026 with a capacity of 53 MW. Two additional generators of the same capacity are expected to come online in January 2027.
The U.S. has 2.7 GW of conventional geothermal power, with EGS potentially providing 135 GW in the Great Basin alone. Key challenges include high construction costs and the risk of induced seismicity. Ongoing research and partnerships are aimed at mitigating these issues. The Department of Defense is collaborating with geothermal developers for EGS plants to support military bases across several states.
