Finnish Defence Forces to Acquire Anti-Personnel Landmines Following Treaty Withdrawal
The Finnish Defence Forces will begin acquiring anti-personnel landmines and training military personnel following the country's withdrawal from the Ottawa Anti-Personnel Landmines Convention. The initiative aims to enhance defense capabilities, with training set to commence in early 2026 and the development of new mines in collaboration with the domestic defense industry anticipated by 2027. The use of these mines will be governed by strict guidelines to minimize civilian harm.

The Finnish Defence Forces will initiate the acquisition of anti-personnel landmines and provide training to personnel, conscripts, and reservists. This decision follows Finland's withdrawal from the Ottawa Anti-Personnel Landmines Convention, effective January 10.
The Defence Forces plan to integrate anti-personnel mines into their engineer materiel projects and operations to enhance defense capabilities. Training for military personnel is set to begin in early 2026, with plans to utilize directed fragmentation charges initially.
Future development of new anti-personnel mines will involve collaboration with the domestic defense industry, with discussions starting in early 2026. The goal is to have new mines and training equipment ready by 2027. The mines will be used under strict supervision and guidelines to minimize civilian harm.
