Fire at Perth Battery Recycling Warehouse Causes $7 Million in Losses
A fire at a Li-ion Energy warehouse in Perth destroyed 80 tonnes of batteries, resulting in approximately $7 million in damages. This incident underscores ongoing challenges in the rapidly expanding battery recycling sector, which is expected to grow significantly by 2050.

On Sunday, a fire at a Perth warehouse owned by Li-ion Energy led to the destruction of 80 tonnes of solid state batteries and an estimated $7 million in goods. Firefighters controlled the blaze within 2.5 hours, and a HAZMAT warning for toxic air in Maddington was lifted by Monday morning.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, though the company's founder, Justin Manton, noted he observed the fire potentially starting from a battery pallet. Li-ion Energy, founded in 2024, is focusing on damage assessment and clean-up while the battery recycling industry is projected to triple in size by 2050, with current valuations at $2.1 billion. This incident highlights the need for improved safety standards and incident reporting within the sector.
