Fire Chief Warns Against Unauthorized Burning Near Point Lisas Industrial Estate
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Ansar Ali warned against unauthorized land burning after a bushfire near Rivulet Road in Couva, close to the Point Lisas Industrial Estate. The fire raised concerns due to its proximity to the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago's laydown yard.
Ali stressed that during the dry season (December 1-June 30), burning without a permit from the T&T Fire Service is illegal and can have serious consequences, including risks to underground natural gas pipelines. Energy Minister Roodal Moonilal confirmed the safety of the gas infrastructure and underlined the importance of maintaining a 6.4-meter clearance around pipelines to prevent hazards. The fine for burning without a permit is $20,000 and six months' imprisonment.
