First F-35A Fighter Delivered to Finland as FA-18 Phase-Out Begins
Finland has received its first F-35A fighter, designated JF-501, as part of a significant defense acquisition to replace its FA-18 fleet. The country plans to acquire a total of 64 F-35A fighters, with full operational capability expected by 2030, while JF-501 will initially undergo training in the U.S. The delivery marks a crucial step towards enhanced defense capabilities and improved interoperability with allied forces in Northern Europe.

The first F-35A fighter, designated JF-501, was delivered to Finland, marking the transition to the execution phase of the country's largest defense acquisition. Finland plans to procure 64 F-35A fighters, with the first aircraft expected to arrive in Finland by 2026 and full operational capability targeted by 2030.
JF-501 will initially remain in the U.S. for pilot and maintenance training at Eglin Air Force Base and Ebbing Air National Guard Base, where Finnish personnel will prepare for operational readiness. The aircraft features advanced capabilities including low-observable design, integrated avionics, and a combat radius of approximately 2,200 kilometers. Its delivery signifies a shift from procurement planning to active defense enhancement and improved interoperability with allied forces in Northern Europe.
