First Nuclear-Powered Container Ship Design Collaboration Targets 16,000-TEU Vessel
FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER
A partnership has been formed to create a conceptual design for the world's first nuclear-powered container vessel, capable of carrying 16,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This initiative, signed at the Global R&D Center in Bundang, South Korea, aims to assess the viability of nuclear energy as a power source for commercial shipping.
The project will investigate electric propulsion linked to nuclear energy, electrical equipment selection, and onboard power system layout. The vessel will utilize Small Modular Reactor technology, generating approximately 100 megawatts (134,000 horsepower), facilitating easier integration into maritime applications.
