Florence, SC Allocates $85M for Water Infrastructure Upgrades
Florence, South Carolina, is investing $85 million in water quality improvements over several years to enhance its drinking water and wastewater systems. The initiative includes capacity expansion, advanced monitoring systems, and resilience measures against climate-related disruptions.

Florence is executing a multi-year program to upgrade drinking water and wastewater infrastructure with a dedicated investment of nearly $85 million. This initiative focuses on enhancing the surface water treatment plant capacity from 10 to 15 million gallons per day and optimizing groundwater production systems, which supply 63% of the city's drinking water.
A new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system will enable real-time monitoring and operational control. The program is aligned with a 20-year master plan for water distribution and sewer systems, approved by the city council, and will modernize sewer infrastructure, including upsizing the Jeffries Creek interceptor.
Planned improvements will address resilience against hurricanes and extreme weather events, enhancing system reliability and emergency capabilities. Implementation will proceed in phases, starting with site investigations and engineering assessments.
