Fluvanna County's Planning Commission voted 3-1 to deny approval for a new Tenaska natural gas power plant adjacent to its existing facility on Branch Road. The commission found that the proposal did not align with the county's comprehensive plan, with Commissioner Kathleen Kilpatrick stating it contradicts certain aspects of the plan.
Concerns were raised about pollution and the plan's relevance to rural issues, highlighted by Jennifer Ruffner, who presented a petition from over 8,000 residents opposed to the project. Citizens, including Lake Monticello resident Tracy Smith, questioned the legitimacy of past approvals for the existing plant, citing a lack of substantial accord review.
The lengthy public meeting included input from residents, with some reporting noise disturbances from the current plant. The session was extended to include the Board of Supervisors due to their attendance.
