Former Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski Dies at 74 After Prolonged Illness

DEFENSE

Uri Lupolianski, the first and only ultra-Orthodox mayor of Jerusalem, died at 74 following a lengthy illness. He served as mayor from 2003 to 2008 and was later convicted in the Holyland bribery case, which involved a significant real estate scandal.

Lupolianski founded Yad Sarah in 1976, a major charitable organization in Israel, and his bribe convictions were found to have funded this initiative. His funeral will take place at Har HaMenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem.

Lupolianski was born in Haifa in 1951 and served as a medic in the Israel Defense Forces before becoming a religious school teacher. He was sentenced to six years in prison, which was later commuted to six months of community service due to health issues. He continued to manage Yad Sarah until his passing.
