Fortis Energy has taken a significant step in expanding its renewable energy footprint in Serbia by securing a construction permit for a solar park with a capacity of 270 MW in Sremska Mitrovica. Mayor Branislav Nedimovi announced this development, emphasizing the project's potential to enhance the local energy landscape. The solar park will include a battery energy storage system (BESS) boasting a 36 MWh capacity, aligning with global trends toward energy resilience and sustainability.

This initiative follows Fortis Energy’s acquisition of a solar power project in Serbia last year, which was originally set to connect to the grid at 180 MW. The firm has ambitious plans, including additional energy storage systems, as highlighted by Chief Operational Officer Velimir Gavrilovi during the Belgrade Energy Forum. The projects known as No AJ 1 and No AJ 2 are reportedly nearing a state of readiness for construction.

The solar park is strategically located on private land south of the River Sava, near Drenovac village, which is positioned west of Belgrade. Mayor Nedimovi indicated that construction is expected to commence in the spring, with a transmission permit anticipated within three months, signaling a rapid progression toward operational status.

In addition to the Sremska Mitrovica project, Fortis Energy has signed a contract for a 110 MW solar facility in the neighboring municipality of Erdevik, which will also integrate a BESS with 31.2 MWh capacity. The company's portfolio includes wind power projects and five biogas facilities within Serbia, totaling 21 MW.

Furthermore, Fortis Energy recently commissioned a photovoltaic plant in North Macedonia, showcasing its broad commitment to renewable energy across the Balkan region. As the company continues to invest in lithium-ion battery technology, it aims to bolster energy storage capabilities, allowing for enhanced grid stability and efficiency.
