Fortum Partners with Steady Energy to Develop Small Modular Reactor for District Heating

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

Fortum signed a framework agreement to support Steady Energy's development of the LDR-50 small modular reactor (SMR) for district heating. Fortum will provide nuclear expert services and invest €2.1m in the project.

The LDR-50 reactor, under development since 2020, aims for a 2029 construction start for its first plant. The Finnish Radiation & Nuclear Safety Authority assessed the reactor's safety in June 2025. Steady Energy has agreements for 15 reactors and is working on projects in Helsinki, Kuopio, and Kerava.
