France and EU Invest Shs735bn in Uganda's Nalubaale and Kiira Dam Rehabilitation
France and the EU are committing Shs735 billion to rehabilitate Uganda's Nalubaale and Kiira dams, enhancing clean energy. This investment aims to modernize aging infrastructure, improve energy generation, and support socio-economic development in the region.

The government of France and the European Union are investing Shs735 billion for the rehabilitation of Uganda's Nalubaale and Kiira hydropower stations. Under this financing, Agence Française de Développement (AFD) will provide a €73 million soft loan and a €2 million grant, while the EU will contribute a €10 million grant.
Nalubaale, constructed in 1954, has a capacity of 180 megawatts, while Kiira contributes 200 megawatts. Upgrades will involve modern turbines, electromechanical systems, and improved water flow management.
The project aims to enhance climate resilience and support industrialization. Preparations are underway, with works expected to commence next year. Although prior upgrades were made, significant refurbishment is still required to meet current operational demands. This initiative is critical for stabilizing Uganda's electricity supply and supporting a low-carbon economy.
