France's Ascendancy in Europe's Bioeconomy Landscape
France is rapidly establishing itself as a leader in the European bioeconomy, driven by robust public funding and research initiatives. The France 2030 initiative allocates €54bn for emerging startups, with a focus on decarbonisation and innovation.

France's bioeconomy sector is experiencing significant growth, with startups in the circular economy raising nearly €150m in 2025, up from €83m in 2024. In the biotech space, funding surged from €216m to €501m during the same period.
The France 2030 initiative and its associated funding programs, including the €45.5m Origins PEPR, are critical in supporting early-stage research in life sciences. Additionally, the European Investment Bank, in collaboration with BPCE, has committed to €200m in loans for SMEs in the farming and bioeconomy sectors.
Despite these advances, scaling remains a challenge, as the ecosystem needs to better bridge startups with established industry players for broader market adoption. France's agricultural assets and a strong regulatory framework provide a solid foundation, yet competing globally with rapid economies like China and the US poses a risk.
