France's Data Centers Projected to Triple Energy Use by 2050
France's data centers, currently consuming 10 TWh annually, could see energy use surge to 55 TWh by 2050, raising infrastructure concerns.

France's data centers currently consume around 10 TWh of electricity each year, representing 2.2% of the country's total energy consumption. Projections suggest that by 2035, this consumption may increase by 3.7 times, potentially reaching 55 TWh by 2050, with an additional 200 TWh expected from foreign data centers.
This escalating demand poses significant challenges for the electrical infrastructure, as it must adapt to meet the needs of digital sovereignty and carbon neutrality. France's reliance on a decarbonized electricity supply may help, but the pressure on the grid will heighten due to increasing data center operations and electrification initiatives.
