French Army Tests Hydrogen-Powered Hermione UGV for 2027 AI Combat Unit

DEFENSEFUEL CELLHYDROGEN

The French Army is testing the hydrogen-powered Hermione unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) at the Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan Military Academy. This initiative is part of the Pendragon program, aimed at integrating AI in future military operations, with the first AI-directed combat unit expected to be operational by 2027.

Developed by Polish company P.H.U. Lechmar and French firm H2X-Defense, Hermione features a modular design, a payload capacity of 300 kilograms, and can carry up to two tons in some variants. It reaches a top speed of 24 miles per hour and operates for up to 20 hours on hydrogen fuel cells. The ongoing trials will assess the UGV's autonomy, mobility, and energy performance, contributing to the requirements for the future robotic unit.
