Gainesville Regional Utilities to Increase Electric Bills by $5 Due to Fuel Adjustment
Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) will increase its fuel adjustment for electric customers from 35 mills to 40 mills per month starting January, due to rising natural gas prices influenced by cold weather. This change will result in an additional cost of $5 for customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours monthly.
GRU clarified that it does not profit from this adjustment, which is intended solely to cover the expenses of natural gas. In 2023, GRU reduced the fuel adjustment from 80 mills to 35 mills, and in January 2023, the fuel adjustment nearly matched the base rate, impacting Gainesville's electric bill ranking in Florida. To manage future increases, GRU is pursuing long-term, pre-paid fuel contracts and diversifying fuel sources for power generation.
