Gambit Faces Funding Challenges Amid L.A. Defense Industry Growth and SBIR Program Dispute
Gambit, a tech company focused on AI-driven military assets, is facing funding challenges due to a dispute over the expired Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which has hindered its growth despite securing military contracts. The company previously received $3.3 million and sought an additional $5 million, but recent legislative conflicts have stalled funding restoration efforts, delaying $94 million in contracts for over 25 companies and impacting the local defense tech ecosystem.

Josh Giegel's tech company Gambit, launched in 2023 in North Hollywood, aims to develop AI-driven military assets. The company has secured military contracts but faces growth challenges due to a funding dispute over the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which expired in September.
This program has been crucial for many local startups; Gambit previously received $3.3 million and sought an additional $5 million. In 2024, SpaceWERX awarded 124 contracts worth $173 million to California companies, emphasizing the significance of SBA funding.
However, recent legislative conflicts, particularly a bill introduced by Sen. Joni Ernst, have stalled funding restoration efforts. The impasse has delayed $94 million in contracts for over 25 companies, impacting the local defense tech ecosystem, which relies heavily on initial SBIR funding.
