Gen. Muhoozi Launches Anti-Corruption Drive in Uganda's Military Amid Urban Crime Surge

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, chief of defence forces in Uganda, has initiated an anti-corruption campaign within the military as violent urban crime escalates. This effort has resulted in the arrest of several high-ranking officers, including two colonels and a captain from the Air Force for inflating procurement costs, and Maj.

Gen. James Birungi, a former intelligence chief, for allegedly falsifying intelligence reports. The crackdown coincides with rising criminal activity in the Kampala Metropolitan Area, where gangs armed with machetes have targeted residents.

Police arrested 136 suspects in October. Additionally, organized crime has vandalized national infrastructure, leading to blackouts and increased robberies. The government has introduced severe penalties for related crimes.

Tensions between the military and police have also escalated, highlighted by violent incidents at police stations. The unresolved murder of a retired couple in Entebbe further emphasizes the security challenges.
