Genesis Energy Expands Coal Stockpile at Huntly Power Station Amid Rising Power Prices in New Zealand
In response to the harsh winter of 2024, major power generators, including Genesis Energy, have increased the coal stockpile at the Huntly Power Station to enhance energy security. Acknowledging the failure of gas as a transition fuel, the sector is now focusing on the construction of 1400 megawatts of new generation capacity, projected to come online soon.
While electricity prices surged in 2024 due to higher distribution costs, a decrease in the electricity component of power bills is expected with new capacity. Gas, contributing about 8% to New Zealand's power generation, remains essential, with liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports considered to address depleting reserves.
Meridian plans multiple developments for 2026, while discussions on expanding Lake Pūkaki for hydro storage are underway to mitigate energy intermittency. The government's procurement process for LNG highlights the sector's focus on affordability and long-term energy solutions.
