German Physicists Achieve Quantum Teleportation Over 79km Fiber Optic Network

Physicists at Germany's Ferdinand-Braun-Institut have achieved quantum teleportation over 79 kilometers of standard fiber-optic cables. Led by Stephan Reitzenstein, the team successfully transmitted quantum information using telecom-compatible wavelengths, marking a significant step towards integrating quantum technologies with existing internet infrastructure.

The experiment utilized quantum entanglement and indium gallium arsenide quantum dots to generate entangled photons, demonstrating that quantum signals can coexist with classical data. This work, part of the Quantum Flagship program, has implications for secure communications, as quantum key distribution may provide unbreakable security.
