Germany Establishes 5 LNG Terminals to Secure Gas Supply Post-Russian Imports

NATURAL GAS

Germany has rapidly restructured its gas supply after the cessation of Russian pipeline deliveries, focusing on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Five key terminals at Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel, Stade, Mukran on Rügen, and Lubmin are set to protect households and industries from shortages.

In 2024, LNG terminals are projected to account for approximately 69 terawatt-hours of gas imports, around 8% of total imports. Wilhelmshaven is the main hub with two state-operated floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), aiming to reach an annual capacity of 4.6 billion cubic meters by 2026.

Brunsbüttel has a floating terminal with a potential capacity of 3.7 billion cubic meters. Stade’s FSRU is anticipated to begin operations in Q2 2026 with about 4.7 billion cubic meters capacity. Mukran aims for 13.5 billion cubic meters capacity, while Lubmin serves as a strategic node in the pipeline network. Together, these sites could theoretically supply over 30 billion cubic meters annually.
