Germany Orders Eight MQ-9B SeaGuardian Drones from General Atomics for Navy

DEFENSE

The German Armed Forces has ordered eight MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aerial systems from General Atomics, with deliveries set to begin in 2028. The contract, valued at approximately 1.52 billion euros, includes spare parts and crew training for two years.

The MQ-9B will enhance maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities and will be operated by Naval Air Wing 3 'Graf Zeppelin' at Nordholz. The aircraft can remain airborne for up to 30 hours and carry payloads of 2,000 kilograms.

Germany's procurement will be facilitated through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, joining other NATO countries that have selected the MQ-9B, including the UK and Belgium. Preparatory steps include crew training and infrastructure development before the first flight operations.
