Germany Records Over 1,000 Unauthorized Drone Flights, Expands Defense Measures
Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has documented over 1,000 unauthorized drone flights by mid-December 2024, focusing on military bases, airports, and critical infrastructure, raising security concerns. BKA President Holger Munch highlighted military facilities, arms manufacturers, and port facilities as major targets.
The origin of the drones remains unclear, complicating incident attribution. In response, Germany is enhancing its drone defense capabilities with the inauguration of a Joint Drone Defense Center (GDAZ) in Berlin, set to become operational in January.
A specialized police unit of 130 personnel will be deployed to high-security locations with AI-supported jamming systems. The German parliament has allocated over €100 million for advanced drone defense technology from local and Israeli manufacturers, part of reforms to the Air Security Act that will expand police and military powers to counter unauthorized drones.
