Germany's Chancellor Merz Criticizes Nuclear Phase-Out as Strategic Error; Bavaria Proposes Fusion Projects

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany labeled the country's nuclear phase-out as a 'strategic mistake' due to its impact on energy capacity and costs, stating that the reliance on renewable energy has increased emissions and dependency on fossil fuels. Merz criticized the previous administration's energy policies and announced plans for new nuclear power plants, emphasizing the need for energy security.

Meanwhile, Bavaria plans to develop three nuclear fusion projects, including a commercial-scale reactor at the former Gundremmingen site, with an estimated operation timeline of around 15 years. Proxima Fusion leads the projects, which aim to achieve net-positive energy output. Additionally, international developments include a US-Slovakia agreement for a new nuclear unit at Bohunice and investments in advanced nuclear technology by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power in TerraPower's Natrium reactor.
