Germany's Chancellor Merz Visits Gulf States for LNG Amid Energy Policy Contradictions

NATURAL GAS

Chancellor Friedrich Merz is traveling to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE on February 4 to discuss energy, security, and economic cooperation, particularly regarding LNG. The German government is seeking new gas sources to reduce reliance on both Russian and American LNG.

Energy experts criticize this approach, arguing that sourcing LNG from Gulf states contradicts previous moral objections to Russian gas. Germany's current imports of US LNG represent only 10% of total gas imports, down from 55% from Russia in 2021.

Merz's new LNG contracts may not create significant new dependencies but raise ethical concerns regarding human rights in the Gulf. Germany aims to stop LNG imports by 2043, challenging the feasibility of long-term contracts from Gulf nations. Current agreements with Qatar for LNG supplies already exist, complicating the energy strategy as the country balances political interests and energy security.
