Germany's Maritime Sector Faces Critical Challenges Amid EU Strategy
Germany's maritime industry risks losing its competitive edge without immediate political action. The European Commission's new maritime strategy must be translated into concrete measures to enhance shipbuilding and port operations.

The German maritime sector is under pressure, with industry leaders urging for immediate political intervention to seize a crucial opportunity for enhancing its global shipping position. A joint warning from the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM) and IG Metall Küste highlighted structural challenges, including workforce shortages and inadequate policy support, which could undermine demand from energy transitions and defense needs.
Despite a strong order book, shipyards face a labor crisis, particularly in attracting younger workers. German ports are experiencing declining freight volumes, exacerbated by insufficient modernization and competition from international ports.
The European Commission's recent strategies for the maritime industry must be matched by national initiatives to maintain competitiveness and security. A failure to act could jeopardize Germany's economic stability and supply security, which rely heavily on a robust maritime trade.
