Gitanyow Chiefs Oppose Prince Rupert Gas Transmission and Ksi Lisims LNG Project in British Columbia

NATURAL GAS

Gitanyow hereditary chiefs oppose the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) and Ksi Lisims LNG export terminal projects in British Columbia, urging major banks not to support these initiatives. A letter, endorsed by over 125 civil society organizations, was sent in early December to 43 banks and pension funds to respect Gitanyow rights and refrain from financing the LNG project.

The Nisga'a Nation is a partner in the project, while the Gitanyow have consistently voiced their opposition due to concerns over their territory. The hereditary chiefs highlight the financial risks associated with the project, citing rising costs, a lack of long-term buyers, and potential impacts on salmon habitats.

Additionally, Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla communities have filed separate legal challenges, alleging that the British Columbia Minister of Environment ignored their concerns. The Haida Nation has also expressed opposition to increased tanker traffic in their coastal waters.
