GKN Aerospace Acquires Volvo Aero Amid Economic Challenges
GKN Aerospace Engine Systems was formed in 2012 following GKN's acquisition of Volvo Aero. This strategic acquisition reflects the ongoing consolidation in the aerospace industry, particularly among engine manufacturers.

In 2012, GKN Aerospace acquired Volvo Aero, originally established in 1930 as Nohab Flygmotorfabriker AB. The company transitioned through several ownerships, including a move to SAAB in 1937, and became a key supplier for the Swedish Air Force.
By the 1970s, it expanded into commercial aerospace and the European space sector. Economic downturns, particularly the Great Recession, led to a significant business decline and layoffs, prompting Volvo to sell its aerospace division.
GKN emerged as the leading bidder to finalize the acquisition. This consolidation may lead to further shifts in the aerospace market landscape.
