Glucina Alloys, New Zealand's only aluminium recycling foundry located in Auckland, is at risk of closing due to an expiring natural gas supply. The company cannot switch to electricity due to high costs, with local lines company Vector charging $500,000 for capacity provision.
This is despite existing infrastructure. Additionally, Glucina would need to invest another $300,000 for necessary equipment and installation. Without an alternative energy source, the foundry's operations are threatened.
