Google has invested in Japanese startup Sakana AI, which aims to advance the chatbot Gemini's presence in Japan. This investment follows Sakana's $135 million Series B funding round last year that valued the startup at approximately $2.6 billion.
The collaboration will enable Sakana to utilize Alphabet Inc.'s language models to develop its products and improve reliability in critical services. Founded in 2023, Sakana has secured contracts in Japan's finance sector with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. and Daiwa Securities Group Inc.
The startup is also looking to collaborate more closely with Japan's Defense Ministry and other government agencies while expanding its enterprise client base and pursuing growth internationally. If successful, it may require additional capital to support its initiatives.
