Grasberg Mine Plans Production Restart by End-2027 Amid Copper Price Surge
The Grasberg Mine in Indonesia is targeting a full production resumption by late 2027, following disruptions due to a mudflow in 2025. Freeport-McMoRan has faced challenges in recovery efforts, impacting copper supply and contributing to rising global prices.

Grasberg Mine, the second-largest copper mine globally, aims for full production by the end of 2027 after a mudflow incident in September 2025 halted operations for nearly a month. Freeport-McMoRan initially projected an 85% production recovery by mid-2026, but this was revised to 65% due to delays in logistics and ore handling infrastructure improvements.
PT Freeport Indonesia's head, Tony Wenas, suggested a possible extension to early 2028 for complete restoration. Nonetheless, Freeport's management in Phoenix continues to support the end-of-2027 timeline, with partial operations having resumed in unaffected sections as of April 2026. These developments could lead to tighter copper supply in the market, impacting pricing dynamics further.
