Greek Shipowners Place 47 Newbuilding Orders, Focus on Crude Tankers

NATURAL GAS

Greek shipowners have placed 47 newbuilding orders, maintaining an orderbook of over 750 ships. Analysis by Intermodal Shipbrokers indicates a strategic shift towards tankers, particularly crude tankers, as the most attractive investment.

In Q4 2025 and early 2026, interest in bulk carriers has weakened, with only two Kamsarmax orders from Safe Bulkers. Dominating the crude oil tanker sector, Dynacom leads with 16 VLCCs and an LR2, while Cape Shipping has ordered a 319,000 dwt VLCC.

Other companies like Lavinia Tankers, Stealth Maritime, JHI Steamship, and New Shipping have added a total of seven Suezmax orders. Costamare has ordered 12 containerships, and Alpha Gas Carriers and TMS Cardiff Gas have ordered LNG carriers. Further new orders in 2026 are anticipated from financially strong shipowners as the tanker market shows growth potential.
