Green Bay School Board Rejects Portable Weapon Detection System Pilot Program
The Green Bay Area Public School District board voted 5-2 against a pilot program for a portable weapon detection system. Four options were presented, including a two-week trial at no cost, a four-month trial for $9,000, a monthly trial at $2,500, and a two-week trial for $20,000.
Concerns included unclear funding sources and the systems' effectiveness in ensuring safety. Board members expressed skepticism about the systems creating a false sense of security and highlighted issues such as staff requirements, entrance bottlenecks, and the potential for false positives.
Discussions on safety have escalated following a loaded handgun incident at Preble High School. The board has already implemented a clear backpack policy and stricter consequences for weapon possession. Future proposals for a weapon detection system pilot remain possible.
