Green Hydrogen Initiatives Expand in Latin America and Europe
New hydrogen projects in Latin America aim to enhance green energy capacity, with potential impacts on global steel production.

Recent announcements have highlighted several green hydrogen initiatives across Latin America, including AES Gener's plan for a production facility in Chile, which will require 850 MW of renewable energy. In Uruguay, a government tender is being prepared for a pilot hydrogen project aimed at sustainable mobility, while Mexico is reviewing a PV project to support a 75 MW hydrogen plant.
In Brazil, GEP Global and Vale are collaborating under the Hydrogen Decarbonisation Alliance for Steel (Hydeas) to establish a green iron supply chain to Europe, with ongoing feasibility studies for a hydrogen production facility. The project's scale and investment timeline remain undefined.
Import strategies for DRI versus hydrogen are under consideration in Europe, affecting costs and industrial control. The shift towards low-carbon steel production could significantly lower carbon emissions associated with steel manufacturing.
