Guangzhou Orders 450 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses Amid China’s National Hydrogen Experiment
Guangzhou has placed an order for 450 hydrogen fuel cell buses, the largest public procurement of its kind globally, with an investment of 268.7 million Yuan. This initiative is part of China's broader 'China Hydrogen City Clusters' program, launched in 2021, aimed at testing hydrogen technology across 44 cities to enhance transportation and industrial applications. The Chinese government remains committed to integrating hydrogen into its energy strategy to achieve climate goals and reduce reliance on foreign energy sources.

Guangzhou has ordered 450 hydrogen fuel cell buses from two manufacturers, including Hyundai's subsidiary HTWO Guangzhou, marking the largest public procurement for fuel cell buses globally. The Guangzhou Public Transport Group is investing 268.7 million Yuan (about 32.5 million Euros) for this acquisition.
This order is part of a wider national initiative by the Chinese government to test hydrogen technology across 44 cities through 'China Hydrogen City Clusters,' which began in 2021. These clusters, including the Guangdong cluster, aim to evaluate hydrogen's utility in transportation and other industrial applications, with infrastructure like pipelines and refueling stations being developed. Despite slow progress in deployment, the Chinese government is committed to incorporating hydrogen into its energy mix to meet climate goals and reduce dependency on foreign energy sources.
