Gulf South Pipeline Requests FERC Approval for Petal Natural Gas Storage Expansion
Gulf South Pipeline has filed an application with FERC to expand its natural gas storage facility at the Petal Salt Dome. The new cavern aims to meet rising demand and enhance gas supply reliability. Construction could start in Q1 2027 and finish by late 2030, pending approvals.

Gulf South Pipeline has requested federal approval to expand its natural gas storage facility beneath the Petal Salt Dome in Mississippi. The application was filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on Feb. 27.
The project will add a new cavern to the existing eight at the Petal Storage Complex, addressing increasing demand for gas storage services. Construction is proposed along U.S. Highway 11, utilizing 35 acres of land and five access roads. If approved by Dec. 17, construction could begin in Q1 2027 and conclude by late 2030, subject to local and state requirements.
