Gwacheon City Challenges Government's New Public Housing Plan Over Capacity and Infrastructure Concerns
Gwacheon City has expressed strong objections to the government’s plan to designate new public housing districts, including areas around Let's Run Park and the Defense Counterintelligence Command, citing it as unilateral and ignoring the city's capacity limits. The city emphasizes that it can no longer tolerate large-scale housing development due to simultaneous ongoing projects, which encompass over 16,000 housing units and are significantly larger than the original downtown area.
This rapid development is leading to adverse impacts on population structure and infrastructure, particularly in traffic and essential services like water and education, which are nearing saturation. Gwacheon City also questions whether increased housing supply will stabilize prices or exacerbate speculation and regional disparities.
The city argues that without adequate infrastructure expansion, housing initiatives will result in increased burdens for residents. Mayor Shin Gye-yong calls for a comprehensive review process rather than unilateral decisions.
